Toronto Fashion Week / school

Pink Tartan:

Well Pink Tartan did another military inspired showing and... it was a complete success! The opening look combined with the banger soundtrack set the show off right. The first model had a wet looking bun sitting on top of her head and as you headed down you saw a fitted top, and a bouncy tulle skirt finished with I perceive to be knee high boots. All black and finished with some sort of gun or knife holster strapped across the models chest. Silk blouses, navy jumpsuits, cadet caps, nude pumps, long camo dresses and did I mention the fantastical feathers that followed? Feathered mini skirts with silk blouses tucked in. Now picture that combo in all white and all plum... Amazing right?

Did someone say Audi?/ school

This past Friday Greta Constantine's Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill showed off their fall/winter 2011 collection at the Audi dealership located on Bayview. Floor length gowns, Grecian jersey dresses, velvet and enough luxe details to satisfy your inner fashion cravings covered this runway. Indigo blues, majesty purples and burgundy flowed perfectly on the dresses while the neutral coats in ivory, black and charcoal anchored the outfit for a more complete look. Another touch that I liked were the "comforter like" wraps that went with the wide legged pants on the runway. It was quite the cozy look that complimented the snow machine and bright flashing round lights. The menswear portion was classically put together with heavy neutrals of black and grey with pieces that could be worked into every man's wardrobe(minus the bruised up faces). I actually spoke to part of the designer duo Stephen Wong after the show, and he told me about the inspiration behind the show. He said that he wanted to take a trip around the world and make references upon the prairies and Asian influences. As far as beauty everything would be done in a simple way with slicked hair and matted makeup. What's next for these jersey boys? Who knows but they definitely have me wanting to stay in the cold just a little bit longer... as long as I get to wear their new collection of course lol

Samosa Time!/school

Samosa's are awesome! For those of you who know what samosa's are please bare with me, but those of you who are scratching your heads right now you're in for a treat! Although celebrated in many countries, samosa's are commonly known to be an Indian delicacy that comes fried in the form of a small triangular pastry. It can be filled with either beef or chicken, and there's a vegetarian option as well. The vegetarian option usually includes seasoned potatoes, onions, lentils and coriander. It's so weird because I've heard of this dish before, but not once did I try it because it wasn't something I was use to. People in high school use to eat it all the time, and now I'm proud to say I'm a believer. Also it doesn't hurt that if you find any Samosa King in your neighborhood you can get 25 veggie versions for only $5! So my challenge to everyone is to try a new food you might be scared of and embrace it. Also ask around and scope out any deals you can.

Check out this site for recipe's on how to make any sort of Samosa you like enjoy

Spring 2011 Trends PT 1/ School

Well everyone it's finally here! The last mountain of snow is melting, the puffer coats are being wrapped up, and the sun is making more than an appearance giving us a lasting impression that spring has arrived. Now the question is What am I going to wear? Well it's simple and it all comes down to the top five trends that are sure to knock em dead. First thing is colour, colour and more colour! Teal, citrus, and poppy shades dominated the runways of noteworthy's Jil Sander and Hayder Ackerman. Pull these colours together for with a subtle neutral or combine the different colours for your own little eclectic look. The second top trend is all about lace. Put on a lace dress and strap on some matching Mary Janes for the ultimate feminine romantic look. So if the idea of head to toe lace sends shivers on your insides add a splash of neon a la Christopher Kane or throw on some combat boots to toughen up your final look. The next trend is midi as in mid length. That's right skirts and dresses are no longer hitting at the usual knee or ankle but instead...mid calf. This is all due to the ladylike silhouettes designers such as Rodarte and Calvin Klein are bringing back in full force-however buyers beware! On the more petite girl this trend can make you look smaller instead of elongating your figure. Opt for sky high structural heels and keep the rest of your look casual for a more "I tried but not really" kind of look. Moving on the next trend to pay attention to has been on the map for quite sometime now. Prints Charming! From Prada, Dries Van Noten, to Givenchy, we seen these bold eclectic prints all over the runway. Flora, leather, leopard, python and even polka dots were used to add juxtaposition to a more classic style. Finally the last trend I want to talk about is all in the pants. Thanks to designers such as Michael Kors and Derek Lam, menswear inspired fashion is officially here to stay. High waisted, relaxed leg or seventies dream, go on out there and try on a pair for size. Part two will arrive shortly so stay tuned...

Oscars/School

So the Oscar's happened last night and surprise surprise I didn't watch. Instead I was watching this amazing new show called Jersey Couture on TLN. It reminds me of a more tame version of Keeping up with the Kardashians, but it's definitely still worth the watch. Now onto the Oscars. Here are my picks for the top three best and worst dressed:

Hailee Steinfeld from True Grit looks stunning in her Marchesa dress. From the headband, to the washed pink hue of her dress, right down to her peep toe pumps, Hailee is definietly deserving to be on this list. Also I must agree with fashion critics everywhere on how age appropriate she looks in this princess-like dress.

Halle Berry is Halle Berry. She looks amazing in everything, and this time in her crystallized Marchesa gown she wowed. I love the organza and silk tulle ruffles finished off with her Christian Louboutin heels. It's weird because surprisingly a lot of the shows I watched didn't acknowledge how on point she was that night. Oh well-here's to you Halle!

Oh Mila why are you so amazing right now?! Out of all the dresses that I saw, this Elie Saab silk organza number was one that I would love to wear. The lavender is spot on with her olive skin tone and the hair and makeup stand up to the drama of the dress.

!Worst Dressed Alert!

No, No and No! Sorry ladies but you may need to hire a new stylist for your next events. First of all Scarlett Johansson usually looks amazing, but for someone known to be that "ideal curvy girl" she looks more like a solid cylinder in this number. I love the colour and the cutout of this D&G dress but even the hair and makeup is a little too disheveled. Speaking of hair, that's where the problem started to occur with Jennifer Hudson's look. It was almost silly that hairstyle. Also I love the fact that she lost so much weight but for some reason that dress just didn't work on her. Colour was great, but it just didn't come together in her Versace gown. This last one actually may come as a surprise to a lot of people, but all I could think of when I saw Reese in this outfit is totally 90's. Doesn't it seem like something Julia Roberts would have worn back in the day?

Free Weezy

Just in case you haven't already heard, Lil Wayne is out of jail after serving 8 months out of his 1 year sentence. According to MTV.com he plans to head to Miami and see family and friends while finishing up the outlines to his probation stemming from another case. He also looked rejuvenated when photographed sitting courtside at a New Orleans Hornets game with his friends Baby and Mack Maine. For more on the story head to MTV.com. I want to do a longer post on Lil Wayne and the state of hip hop so stay tuned for upcoming posts.

Far East Movement

When I ask most people have you heard of Far East Movement? Those people usually say no, but the minute I mention "Like a G6" everyone knows exactly what I'm talking about. Take 1 cup of dance beats, 1 tablespoon of pop and 1 teaspoon of hip hop and what you get is "free wired". FEM uses that term to describe their eclectic style. Made up of four childhood friends, Proghgress, Kevnish, J-Spliff,and DJ Virman continue to wow everyone with their remarkable talent. Check these songs out Like a G6, Rocketeer, and Girls on the Dance floor
